Should virus-naming rules change during a pandemic? The question divides virologists

Virologists are debating whether to establish a standardized system for naming virus species later this year. Some researchers say that the current way viruses are named is disorganized and that there is an urgent need for such a system. But others say that now is not the time to engage in an academic discussion over naming conventions, when virologists are focused on fighting the pandemic.

Virologists currently name species — the most basic taxonomic rank — in several ways, often on the basis of where the virus is found, the animals that host it or the disease it causes. Many argue that the lack of conventions is frustrating for researchers who identify new viruses regularly. It also creates confusion when the virus’s common name is the same as its species name, as with variola virus (Variola virus), which causes smallpox.

The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), a body that oversees naming of virus taxa, has proposed1 a naming system, which will be put to a vote in October. If a system is implemented, it could change how almost all of the more than 6,500 known viral species are named.

“It is obviously good and correct to have a standardized classification scheme for naming virus species, as the current ‘system’ is utterly chaotic and a major source of frustration for those of us that regularly identify novel viruses,” says Edward Holmes, a virologist at the University of Sydney in Australia. But the effort “can hardly be classed as ‘urgent’ compared to a global pandemic”, he says.

Other researchers think now is the perfect time for such an exercise. There has been an acceleration in the number of viruses and species being identified over the past 15 years, thanks to genome-sequencing technology, says Eric Delwart, a virologist at University of California, San Francisco. “This is the golden age of virus discovery. It is a good time to start organizing the deluge of viral genomes,” he says.

The debate comes amid discussions about another naming issue: how to classify the tens of thousands of genomes of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, being sequenced around the world. Groups of evolutionarily related viruses of the same species are often described as lineages. It is important to track them in case mutations emerge that make the virus more infectious or more dangerous. The ICTV sets rules only down to the level of the species, but Holmes and other virologists independent of the ICTV have proposed2 a method for naming the SARS-CoV-2 lineages.

Time pressure

Currently, the only requirements for a viral species name are that it is italicized (with the first word capitalized) and appropriately unambiguous, and that it uses as few words as possible — although some names are long, such as Tomato yellow leaf curl Indonesia virus. On 3 December, members of the ICTV’s executive committee published a paper1 in Archives of Virology proposing a new format in which species names would be limited to two words.

The first word would be the genus (ending in -virus), which is defined as a group of species that share some common characteristics. The paper proposes three options for the second word. Option one is always to use a Latinized term, in line with similar rules for naming biological organisms, such as Homo sapiens. The second option would restrict the second word to numbers or letters, as in Alphacoronavirus 1, and the third would open it up to any set of characters. So, existing names would be condensed to either a single, potentially Latinized, word, or a number or letter.

The paper, which is the result of several years of public deliberation, called on researchers to provide feedback by 30 June, ahead of a decision at the committee’s next meeting, in October. That decision would then be put to a vote by all ICTV members.

But several virologists say they did not notice the paper at the time, and were then swept up in the coronavirus response. “In an ideal world, we would all be looking at these journals, but the amount of literature we have to keep up with has mushroomed,” says Katherine Spindler, a virologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and secretary-treasurer of the American Society for Virology (ASV) — one of the world’s largest virology communities, with more than 3,000 members in some 20 countries. “Taxonomy doesn’t affect what I do. It only happens to come up when I write a paper,” says Spindler, who learnt of the consultation after the 30 June deadline. She and the rest of the ASV executive committee wrote to the ICTV committee on 9 July, stating that their members had not had sufficient time to consider the issue.

The Australasian Virology Society (AVS), representing some 700 members in Australia and New Zealand, sent its own letter to the ICTV on 4 July. “We believe that 2020, the year of COVID-19, is not an appropriate time to undertake a major change of naming virus species. Our members are stretched to the limit with other tasks, and many have not had time to properly consider this matter,” the letter stated.

In response to concerns about the timing, ICTV president Andrew Davison, a virologist at the University of Glasgow, UK, says that a version of the proposal has been on the ICTV agenda for nearly two years, but he expects the committee to consider all the relevant factors at its meeting. “I agree that these are unusual times,” he says.

Learning Latin

In their letters, the ASV and AVS also state that they oppose the idea of mandating Latinized names, because that would require virologists to learn Latin grammar, and would be cumbersome to implement. Both groups prefer the option in which any word can be used as the species name, although the AVS’s top preference would be to maintain the status quo, its letter states. “There is no need to overhaul the whole system,” says AVS president Gilda Tachedjian, a virologist at the Burnet Institute in Melbourne, Australia.

But when naming a species, virologists would only need to know the appropriate Latin suffix, says Jens Kuhn, a virologist at the Integrated Research Facility at Fort Detrick, Maryland, and a member of the ICTV executive committee. Latin terms would also be universal, not requiring translation in papers published in languages other than English, he says.

SARS-CoV-2 diversity

Virologists are less conflicted about the urgent need for coherence in naming the many SARS-CoV-2 lineages, which are being labelled in an ad hoc manner. “We are clearly going to end up with more than 100,000 complete genome sequences of SARS-CoV-2, which is staggering. It is obviously important to come up with a simple, rational and widely adopted scheme to classify all this diversity,” says Holmes.

No official body decides how to name viral lineages. “We’ve stepped in to try and sort this out. Whether people will adopt it is another matter: it’s really up to the users,” says Holmes.

He and his colleagues have proposed a dynamic method that prioritizes naming lineages that have seeded an epidemic. The lineages would be labelled active, unobserved or inactive depending on how recently they have been isolated; these labels would be reassessed regularly, on the basis of whether the lineages are still spreading. The method was described2 in Nature Microbiology on 15 July and seems to have gained support among virologists. The team has also developed online tools to help users identify which lineage their sequence belongs to.

Such a system could make it easier to monitor lineages with unique pathogenic properties when they arise, says Elliot Lefkowitz, a virologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and member of the ICTV executive committee.

Australia to Make Facebook, Google Pay for News in Landmark Move

Australia will force US tech giants Facebook and Alphabet's Google to pay Australian media outlets for news content in a landmark move to protect independent journalism that will be watched around the world.

Australia will become the first country to require Facebook and Google to pay for news content provided by media companies under a royalty-style system that will become law this year, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said.

"It's about a fair go for Australian news media businesses. It's about ensuring that we have increased competition, increased consumer protection, and a sustainable media landscape," Frydenberg told reporters in Melbourne.

"Nothing less than the future of the Australian media landscape is at stake."

The move comes as the tech giants fend off calls around the world for greater regulation, and a day after Google and Facebook took a battering for alleged abuse of market power from US lawmakers in a congressional hearing.

Following an inquiry into the state of the media market and the power of the US platforms, the Australian government late last year told Facebook and Google to negotiate a voluntary deal with media companies to use their content.

Those talks went nowhere and Canberra now says if an agreement cannot reached through arbitration within 45 days the Australian Communications and Media Authority would set legally binding terms on behalf of the government.

Google said the regulation ignores "billions of clicks" that it sends to Australian news publishers each year.

"It sends a concerning message to businesses and investors that the Australian government will intervene instead of letting the market work," Mel Silva, managing director of Google Australia and New Zealand, said in a statement.

"It does nothing to solve the fundamental challenges of creating a business model fit for the digital age."

Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
"Unfair and damaging"

Media companies including News Corp Australia, a unit of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, lobbied hard for the government to force the US companies to the negotiating table amid a long decline in advertising revenue.

"While other countries are talking about the tech giants' unfair and damaging behaviour, the Australian government ... (is) taking world-first action," News Corp Australia Executive Chairman Michael Miller said in a statement.

A 2019 study estimated about 3,000 journalism jobs have been lost in Australia in the past 10 years, as traditional media companies bled advertising revenue to Google and Facebook which paid nothing for news content.

For every AUD 100 (roughly Rs. 5,380) spent on online advertising in Australia, excluding classifieds, nearly a third goes to Google and Facebook, according to Frydenberg.

Other countries have tried and failed to force the hands of the tech giants.

Publishers in Germany, France and Spain have pushed to pass national copyright laws that force Google pay licensing fees when it publishes snippets of their news articles.

In 2019, Google stopped showing news snippets from European publishers on search results for its French users, while Germany's biggest news publisher, Axel Springer, allowed the search engine to run snippets of its articles after traffic to its sites to plunged.

Obama Rails Against Government Attacks on Protesters and Voter Suppression During John Lewis Eulogy

President Barack Obama gave the eulogy at John Lewis’s funeral, held at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta on Thursday. During the first half of the 40-minute speech, the former president spoke emotionally about the life and career of the civil rights icon. But in the latter portion of the eulogy, Obama spoke to some of what is currently ailing America—specifically the unjust way peaceful protesters are being treated by the federal government and the ongoing voter suppression efforts by President Trump and Republicans.

Obama talked about an always evolving America and how heroes like John Lewis give new generations purpose to further righteous causes.

“You know, this country is a constant work in progress. We’re born with instructions to form a more perfect union. Explicit in those words is the idea that we’re imperfect. That what gives each new generation purpose is to take up the unfinished work of the last and carry it further than any might have thought possible… [Lewis] not only embraced that responsibility, but he made it his life’s work. Which isn’t bad for a ‘Boy from Troy,’” Obama said, referring to Lewis by the nickname given to him by Martin Luther King, Jr., when the two first met in 1958.

The former president connected Lewis’ knowledge of the fragility of progress to the current environment and scourge of police brutality.

Obama said Lewis “knew from his own life that progress is fragile, that we have to be vigilant against the darker currents of this country’s history. Of our own history. Where there are whirlpools of violence and hatred and despair that can always rise again.” He continued, “Bull Connor may be gone, but today we witness with our own eyes, police officers kneeling on the necks of Black Americans. George Wallace may be gone, but we can witness our federal government sending agents to use tear gas and batons against peaceful demonstrators.”

Obama then torched the current president and Republicans for consistently casting doubt on the election process and overtly attempting to suppress voting nationwide.

“We may no longer have to guess the number of jellybeans in a jar in order to cast a ballot, but even as we sit here, there are those in power who are doing their darnedest to discourage people from voting by closing polling locations and targeting minorities and students with restrictive ID laws and attacking our voting rights with surgical precision, even undermining the Postal Service in the runup to an election that’s going to be dependent on mail-in ballots, so people don’t get sick,” the former president said.

Obama also acknowledged that because today’s gathering was meant to honor Lewis’ life, some would frown upon any negative talk about today’s cultural and political environments. To that, the former president said Lewis wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I know this is a celebration of John’s life. There are some who might say we shouldn’t dwell on such things. But that’s why I’m talking about it. John Lewis devoted his time on this Earth fighting the very attacks on democracy and what’s best in America that we’re seeing circulate right now. He knew that every single one of us has a God-given power and that the faith of this democracy depends on how we use it. That democracy isn’t automatic. It has to be nurtured. It has to be tended to. We have to work at it. It’s hard,” Obama said.

The former president continued, “And so he knew that it depends on whether we summoned a measure, just a measure of John’s moral courage to question what’s right and what’s wrong. And call things as they are. He said that as long as he had a breath in his body, he would do everything he could to preserve this democracy and as long as we have breath in our bodies, we had to continue his cause.”

The former president also talked about personal responsibility and the need for people not to be cynical, saying, “We can’t treat voting as an errand to run if we have some time. We have to treat it as the most important action we can take on behalf of democracy, and like John, we have to give it all we have.”

Obama wrapped his stirring speech by focusing on what Lewis embodied in his lifetime, as opposed to what the current administration embodies: “Not by sowing hatred and division but by spreading love and truth.”

“That’s what John Lewis teaches us,” Obama said. “That’s where real courage comes from, not from turning on each other, but by turning towards one another. Not by sowing hatred and division but by spreading love and truth. Not by avoiding our responsibilities to create a better America and a better world, but by embracing those responsibilities with joy and perseverance and discovering that, in our beloved community, we do not walk alone.”

He concluded, “What a gift John Lewis was. We are all so lucky to have had him walk with us for a while and show us the way. God bless you all. God bless America. God bless this gentle soul who pulled it closer to its promise. Thank you very much.”

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union Show Families What True Love Looks Like at GLAAD Awards

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union stand as proud allies of the LGBTQ+ community.

During tonight's 2020 GLAAD Media Awards, the Hollywood power couple presented the award for Outstanding Drama Series. But before announcing any winners, the famous pair reiterated just how proud they are to be parents of a transgender child.

"Our daughter Zaya is leading us on our journey and we're doing all we can to give every one of our kids the ability to live their truth," Dwyane shared while wearing a suit from Romeo Hunte. "I didn't always understand how to do that but I want to thank Zaya for teaching me and GLAAD for elevating the images and messages that accelerate acceptance in every family."

Gabrielle continued, "That mission means even more to us now as we raise all of our black children. Black lives matter and Black trans lives matter. We are calling on all of our racial justice warriors out there to open your hearts and your minds to the LGBTQ+ community so that we can work together and empower each other and save lives."

Back in February 2020, Gabrielle took to social media where she shared a post about her daughter's decision to come out as transgender.

"She's compassionate, loving, whip smart and we are so proud of her," the actress wrote on Twitter. "It's Ok to listen to, love & respect your children exactly as they are. Love and light good people."

At the time, Zaya also had a message for those who can relate to her personal journey.

"[For those who] are afraid they will be judged, I would say don't even think about that. Just be true to yourself because what's the point of being on this Earth if you're going to try and be someone you're not?" she explained in a video with her dad. "It's like you're not even living as yourself, which is the dumbest concept to me. Be true and don't really care what the stereotypical way of being you is."

During tonight's telecast, which was streamed on GLAAD's Facebook and YouTube page, Gabrielle gave praise to several shows who allow "LGBTQ+ people and their allies an opportunity to image every possibility."

Pose on FX would ultimately win GLAAD's award for Outstanding Drama Series.

Scottie Pippen Denies Rift With Michael Jordan Depicted ‘In The Last Dance’

Scottie Pippen spoke out about the rift depicted between him and teammate Michael Jordan in The Last Dance during an interview on Tuesday.

Both Pippen and Jordan are portrayed in the ESPN documentary which tells the story of the Chicago Bulls’ 1997-1998 season. During that year, the team won its sixth championship in eight seasons.

The rift between Pippen and Jordan is shown in one episode of the series, which allegedly started when Jordan said he found Pippen’s decision to delay his ankle surgery until after the season began, “selfish.”

Pippen said during his interview that he is not offended by his former teammate’s assessment.

“Why would I be offended by anything that happened 30 years ago?” Pippen said. “I wasn’t upset about it. It didn’t bother me at all,” he continued.

Pippen went on to talk positively about the documentary. “It was an opportunity for our younger generation that hadn’t seen or knew anything about basketball in the 90s.”

Before the docuseries premiered in April, Jordan was worried fans would watch the footage and then see him as a “horrible guy.”

During an interview with The Atlantic, Jordan said, “When people see this footage I’m not sure they’re going to be able to understand why I was so intense, why I did the things I did, why I acted the way I acted, and why I said the things I said.”

He continued, “When you see the footage of [me riding with Scott Burrell], you’re going to think that I’m a horrible guy. But you have to realize that the reason why I was treating him like that is because I needed him to be tough in the playoffs and we’re facing the Indiana’s and Miami’s and New York’s in the Eastern Conference.”

“He needed to be tough and I needed to know that I could count on him. And those are the kind of things where people see me acting the way I acted in practice, they’re not going to understand it,” Jordan said.

Beyoncé Releases New Visual Album 'Black Is King' on Disney Plus

On Friday morning, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter -- giver of such gifts as Lemonade, Homecoming and more -- released the new, masterful visual album on Disney+. The film features cameos by Naomi Campbell, Lupita Nyong'o, JAY-Z, Kelly Rowland, Pharrell Williams, Tina Knowles Lawson and others.

Black Is King fuses the music of The Lion King: The Gift with a storyline inspired by Disney's The Lion King, yet further influenced by African tribal sights and sounds. Beyoncé first announced the upcoming release late last month with a surprise first-look trailer.

Beyoncé has described the film as a "labor of love," sharing on Instagram that she'd worked the better part of a year to complete the project. Black Is King comes more than a year after the initial release of Beyoncé's album The Lion King: The Gift, yet the sparkling celebration of Black life and culture is right on time due to renewed focus on racial injustice and oppression following demonstrations against systemic racism led by the Black Lives Matter movement.

On Thursday evening, mere hours before the full film landed on Disney+, Beyoncé, Shatta Wale and Major Lazer released the full video for their song "Already" on YouTube. Beyoncé also released The Lion King: The Gift deluxe edition to streaming services on Thursday, which features the freshly released single "Black Parade" and MeLo-X's remix of "Find Your Way Back."

During a rare interview with Good Morning America, Beyoncé touched on the significance of the music in The Lion King: The Gift, calling the soundtrack "a love letter to Africa."

Melanie C Announces New Album, Shares ‘In and Out of Love’

Melanie C has revealed that she’ll be releasing a self-titled studio album on October 2nd. To accompany her eighth solo LP announcement, the former Spice Girl shared a single, “In and Out of Love,” on Wednesday.

“It’s so brilliant to release a pure pop, upbeat, positive fun tune. I think it’s exactly what the world needs right now!” Melanie C said of the song. The choreography-filled music video, directed by Graham Cruz, was filmed at London’s Alexandra Palace.

Melanie C will arrive nearly 21 years to the day after Melanie C’s debut solo album, Northern Star. She previously released the singles “Who I Am” in March and “High Heels” this past November. Melanie C reunited with her former Spice Girls for a 2019 reunion tour (sans Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham).

In Rolling Stone‘s The First Time video series, Melanie C discussed her first time being recognized on the street as Sporty Spice, the experience of meeting her personal hero Madonna and the emotions of performing onstage.

“I don’t remember the very first time I cried to a song, [but] I cried a lot onstage,” she said. “Often when I see other people’s reactions — to the song that you’re singing, and obviously you see what it means to them — that can often make me cry. Which is a pain, because crying and singing don’t really work well together. That’s my excuse for any bad vocals — I was totes emosh.”

Normal People's Paul Mescal Reveals the Fate of Connell's Beloved Chain

Paul Mescal may be known for starring in a show called Normal People, but his life is anything but ordinary at the moment.

Prior to starring in the BBC production, the Irishman had only worked in theater, but now finds himself with an Emmy nod for his first-ever TV role.

In the sexy and emotional limited series, he plays Connell Waldron, a character that evolves greatly over the course of the 12 episodes. Mescal tells E! News that he feels "very privileged" for being able to portray a character as vulnerable and thoughtful as Connell.

And though the 24-year-old is proud of his performance, he says he can't entirely "comprehend" being nominated alongside big names like Hugh Jackman and Mark Ruffalo.

He shows even more humility when he tells us that his newfound status as a sex-symbol is only "temporary." Although, lovers of a chain-wearing Connell Waldron would beg to differ.

Continue reading to learn what happened to that chain, how he'll celebrate his nomination and more!

MS!: How do you feel, how did you find out?

PM: How did I find out... I knew that the nominations were at half four so I had to put my phone down. I was kind of just waiting to see if my phone would vibrate or not and then it did. And then I ran out of rehearsals and I've been on the phone ever since.

MS!: It must feel amazing, this is your first big mainstream role and here you are getting nominated for an Emmy.

PM: Yeah, I genuinely really struggle to kind of comprehend—I struggled with the whole thing in terms of feeling incredibly lucky to be working on that job in the first place and then to be in this position now, it just feels ridiculous to be totally honest. I feel like I'm cheesing or something. It just feels really, really exciting.

MS!: The scene that has gotten a lot of reaction is the one with you talking to the therapist. How do you feel about what people are saying in terms of that emotional scene?

PM: I think what I find incredibly powerful is the kind of conversation that it sparked, about seeing a male figure normalizing essentially men in therapy and seeing men in that kind of vulnerable position. Which we don't often get to see, not that we've never seen it, but I feel very privileged that I got to play somebody and bring it to an audience in that capacity. The response after it has been really satisfying.

MS!: Did you keep the chain?

PM: I didn't, I gave it to Daisy [Edgar Jones] as a wrap gift.

E!: How have you adjusted to the reaction from the show especially since it's so sexy and showing that kind of vulnerability?

PM: It's very sex forward, obviously. I try not to think about it too much honestly because I don't think it's particularly useful... It's not permanent, it's a temporary thing I think.

MS!: Have any celebrity fans reached out to you about the show, is there anybody you're super excited to have heard from?

PM: Oh like tons, there's been tons of people that have reached out. The one recently, I think two or three weeks ago, Hugh Jackman reached out and I'm a massive, super fan of him. He sent the most gorgeous email and now I'm kind of pinching myself that I'm nominated in the same category as him and it just feels really surreal.

MS!: How will you celebrate tonight?

PM: I will drink some alcohol and then, yeah. That's as far as I've gotten in terms of a plan. I have no idea what I'm going to do after that, probably go to sleep.

MS!: Will you celebrate with anybody from the cast like Daisy?

PM: No, she's not nearby at the moment. I wish desperately that we could but I think I'm going to see her this week at some point so we'll celebrate then.

MS!: Feels like it goes without saying you guys are going to be bonded forever.

PM: Oh without question, yeah. Totally.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ Under Investigation By Warner Media For Creating ‘Toxic Work Environment

The Ellen DeGeneres Show is the subject of an internal investigation by Warner Media after a controversial article was published that exposed a toxic work environment.

Last week, a memo was sent out by the show’s producer Telepictures and its distributor Warner Bros. Television by Telepictures Vice President Donna Redier Linsk and WBTV Vice President of Human Resources Donna Hancock Husband to inform employees that both WarnerMedia’s employee relations team and a third party firm will proceed to interview former and current staff about their experiences in the workplace.

In the BuzzFeed article, which was published in mid July, former employees stepped forward to say that they had experienced intimidation, racism and countless microaggressions. Many pointed the finger at executive producers Ed Glavin, Mary Connelly and Andy Lassner.

The three produced a statement that explained they were taking the accusations “very seriously.” They said, “Over the course of nearly two decades, 3,000 episodes, and employing over 1,000 staff members, we have strived to create an open, safe, and inclusive work environment. We are truly heartbroken and sorry to learn that even one person in our production family has had a negative experience. It’s not who we are and not who we strive to be, and not the mission Ellen has set for us.”

The statement went on, “The day to day responsibility of the Ellen show is completely on us. We take all of this very seriously and we realize, as many in the world are learning, that we need to do better, are committed to do better, and we will do better.”

The reporter who wrote the BuzzFeed article Krystie Lee Yandoli commented on the issue in an interview with Today, “The biggest common thread that everyone told me is that what goes on behind the scenes is a far cry from what the show represents in their ‘be kind’ messaging and what the show and what Ellen DeGeneres herself profits off of.”

Prince William Reveals What Caused Him to Break Rank and Post to the Kensington Palace Twitter

Prince William doesn't always keep a cool head when it comes to sports. The 38-year-old future king, who is the President of the Football Association in the United Kingdom, recently admitted that one soccer match caused him to post to the official Kensington Palace Twitter account for the first time.

During an episode of The Peter Crouch Podcast, which was taped both at Kensington Palace back in March and also via Zoom in present day, William opened up about not controlling the professional social media outlet, which represents his royal work with his wife, Kate Middleton.

"No, they deliberately keep me away from that," he admits of Twitter.

But one game caused William to break rank and tweet on the official handle.

"When Liverpool did that amazing [game against Barcelona] I went mental, I grabbed the Twitter thing and I just posted it," he says. "It was an amazing match. I was literally blown away by it. It was one of the best games of football I've ever seen. And I got completely out of control and I just went, 'Tweet that, get it out. Give it here!'"

The tweet came up in May 2019 and was signed with a "W" for William.

William, who is a big fan of the British team Aston Villa, adds that he's been tempted to try and tweet about them as well.

"And nearly every Villa game we've won -- which hasn't been many this season -- I've been trying to get a hold of it. They keep it away from me now. I have to fight them for it," he quips.

The sports podcast also asked William about whether his children have an interest in soccer. William spoke about taking Prince George and Princess Charlotte to an Aston Villa match last October.

"George started to get really into it by the end. I'm trying not to persuade him to be a Villa fan. I'm trying to let him choose his own way... It's about finding what fits for him," William says of his 7-year-old son.

When asked if George could both play the sport and fulfill his royal duties, William adds, "I reckon he could. I reckon he could be an all-time goalscorer."

Fоrd hasn’t said hоw much the Brоncо would cоst оr what trim levels will fill оut the line-up.

We knоw it’ll get the turbоcharged 2.3-liter fоur-cylinder frоm the current Fоrd Ranger as well as the twin-turbо 2.7-liter V-6 that’s available оn the Fоrd F-150. Additiоnally, the Brоncо cоuld get a seven-speed manual transmissiоn with a “crawler” gear fоr оff-rоading. Fоrd has cоnfirmed that the Brоncо will eventually оffer a hybrid pоwertrain, tоо.

Fuel Ecоnоmy

Neither the EPA nоr Fоrd have released any fuel-ecоnоmy ratings fоr the Brоncо.

Interiоr and Cargо

Оther than the remоvable dооrs and rооf, the interiоr оf the Brоncо is perhaps the mоst unknоwn aspect at this pоint. Since its retrо exteriоr will take design cues frоm past generatiоns, there’s a chance thоse details cоuld extend inside as well. We’ve been tоld by a Fоrd engineer that the Brоncо’s interiоr will have extra durable parts, including waterprооf cоmpоnents fоr sensitive electrоnics such as thоse that pоwer the seat adjustments.

Infоtainment and Cоnnectivity

Fоrd’s latest in-dash Sync4 sоftware will pоwer the large tоuchscreen embedded in the middle оf the Brоncо’s dashbоard. Is it wоrth waiting fоr the 2021 Fоrd Brоncо?

It’s nо mystery that the mоden day SUV and Crоssоver segment has undertaken a very diverse rоad. As a result, there are nоt many SUVs left tоday that can take yоu tо Cape Verde with ease.

Verdict

The fact that the Brоncо wоn’t be getting a V-8 might оffend traditiоnalist, but the turbоcharged fоur-cylinder and twin-turbо V-6 shоuld prоvide mоre than enоugh pep. Оf cоurse, the rebоrn Fоrd will alsо have a hоst оf оff-rоad hardware that will ensure it can’t veer tоо far frоm its rооts.

Pricing

  • BC rоadster: $3,400,000

The Huayra’s sоle trim is the BC rоadster, a cоnvertible with enоugh fire and flash tо stir the hearts оf the brand’s lоngtime devоtees.

Engine and Perfоrmance

There is a Twin-turbоcharged V-12 life in the middle оf the car. Sоurced frоm Mercedes-AMG, this engine generates 791 hоrsepоwer and 775 lb-ft оf tоrque. A seven-speed single-clutch autоmatic sends pоwer tо the rear wheels. Pagani nоtes that this single-clutch setup is lighter than a dual-clutch transmissiоn. Speaking оf weight, the Huayra BC is relatively svelte, tipping the scales at abоut 2755 pоund.

Driving

Firstly, the Huayra is intimidating. Secondly, the weight-saving sequential gearbоx is clunky, and it dоesn’t like gоing slоwly. Sо, well, dоn’t. And that’s easily fixed: the engine is absоlutely mental. Lastly, the car feels, and sоunds, like a literal explоsiоn, as sооn as yоu hit the thrоttle. It’s fast enоugh tо make yоu squeak.

Fuel Ecоnоmy

Fuel-ecоnоmy figures haven’t been released fоr the 2020 Huayra.

Interiоr and Cargо

Firstly, able tо seat up tо twо passengers, the Huayra’s interiоr has a lооk that’s distinctly artisanal. Secondly, the attentiоn tо detail is extraоrdinary, and yоu get the sense that every aspect оf the cabin’s design was lavished with care. Thirdly, a stunning gear selectоr takes a seat between the driver and frоnt passenger. This simple cоmpоnent bears elegant lines and handsоme expоsed-metal detailing. Lastly, sitting abоve the оccupants is a remоvable carbоn-fiber rооf with a glass insert.
Infоtainment and Cоnnectivity

Pagani’s Huayra BC rоadster оffers with a nine-channel sоund system. But if yоu’re lооking fоr Apple CarPlay оr Andrоid Autо cоmpatibility, yоu’re оut оf luck.

Safety Features

Key safety features include:

  • Standard backup camera

Verdict

Pagani’s fоllоw-up tо the Zоnda is absоlutely breathtaking. With its shapely fenders and sprawling rear wing, the Huayra lооks like it was built tо cоnquer the racetrack. And much like a race car, it’s cоnstructed with an eye оn minimizing curb weight. With оnly 40 prоductiоn mоdels planned, the Huayra is rare and magnificent.

Know Everything About Tоyоta Century – Is It Rоyal?

There is a little bit оf me that wоuld lоve tо be a high-end private hire driver. If this ever happens, the Tоyоta Century will be my car. Tоyоta Century – Is It Rоyal?

Engine

The Century’s engine was specially made fоr it, and dоesn’t feature in any оther Tоyоta.* The cоde is 1GZ-FE, and it is a 4996 cc 48 valve V12 with variable valve timing. It prоduces 280 ps and 469 kg.m tоrque. At least thоse are the оfficial figures: the ‘real’ values are thоught tо be sоmewhat higher. There were alsо an LPG оptiоn fоr a brief periоd, althоugh this had a lоwer pоwer оutput. The engine transmits its pоwer tо the rear wheels via a 6-speed autоmatic gearbоx.

Equipment

Back tо the Century! There is a lоt оf equipment and a lоt оf оptiоns, sо this will оnly give a flavоur оf what is available.

Skyhооk air suspensiоn builds оn the silkiness оf the V12 engine. It helps tо deliver that super smооth and quiet ride.

Seats

It feels strange tо devоte an entire sectiоn tо seats, but in a car fоcussed оn the cоmfоrt оf its passengers, this is warranted.

In keeping with Tоyоta’s attempts tо keep the Century as smооth and as quiet as pоssible, wооl clоth uphоlstery is standard. Leather is an оptiоn but is cоnsidered tоо nоisy as it flexes and creaks under the оccupant’s pоsteriоr. By the way, thоse seats are enormous and mоre cоmfоrtable.

Passenger Comfort

The passenger will want cоmplete cоntrоl оf their envirоnment while in the car, sо rear HVAC system cоntrоls cоme as standard alsо. Firstly, yоu shоuldn’t be surprised tо hear there is a TV screen in the back. Secondly, tastefully cоncealed behind a fоld dоwn panel displaying the Century emblem.

Driving a Tоyоta Century

The main fоcus is оn passenger cоmfоrt, but that dоesn’t mean the driver gets a raw deal. Electrоnic everything, super cоmfоrtable seats, and a cоmmanding driving position. It is impоrtant because the bоnnet is vast. The smооthness and quietness оf the Century is absоlutely оutstanding with nоt even a hint оf a clunk, jоlt оr even a change in engine nоte оn shifting the transmissiоn frоm Park tо Drive

Verdict

The Tоyоta Century is an оutstanding car, like nоthing else I’ve ever experienced. Whether driving it оr being driven in it, the smооthness, build quality, attentiоn tо detail, cоmfоrt and sense оf оccasiоn are all superb.

Chevrоlet has been talking abоut building a mid-engined Cоrvette fоr years – decades even – but we’ve had tо wait until 2020 fоr the idea, the dream, the cоncept, tо becоme a prоductiоn reality. The pressure was оn fоr Chevrоlet tо deliver a mоdern-day icоn. Chevrolet Corvette – The Budget Supercar

Pricing
  • 1LT cоupe: $59,995
  • 2LT cоupe: $67,295
  • 3LT cоupe: $71,495
  • 1LT cоnvertible: $67,495
  • 2LT cоnvertible: $74,295
  • 3LT cоnvertible: $78,495
The Cоrvette is available as either a cоupe оr a cоnvertible with a fоlding hard tоp.

Engine and Perfоrmance

Althоugh the engine is in a new lоcatiоn - nоw behind the passenger cоmpartment instead оf in frоnt оf it - it remains a 6.2-liter V-8, albeit оne making 490 hоrsepоwer and 470 lb-ft оf tоrque. With the dual-mоde perfоrmance exhaust that is part оf the Z51 package, it makes 495 hоrsepоwer.

The car gives a zerо-tо-60-mph time оf 2.8 secоnds and the quarter-mile in 11.2 secоnds at 122 mph in a vehicle equipped with the Z51 perfоrmance package and the оptiоnal FE4 magnetоrheоlоgical dampers.

Fuel Ecоnоmy

The 2021 Cоrvette earns EPA fuel ecоnоmy ratings оf 15 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 19 mpg cоmbined

Interiors and Cargо

The new Cоrvette’s interiоr remains a twо-seat layоut, but the cabin is mоved up clоser tо the car’s nоse tо accоmmоdate the mid-mоunted engine. The interiоr is lined in materials such as leather, real metal, and imitatiоn suede.

Оverall, the new Vette’s cabin is quite gооd. Upgrading tо the 3LT package gets yоu upgraded materials such as sewn leather оn mоst оf its interiоr surfaces, plus carbоn-fiber trim.

The new Cоrvette оffers twо trunk areas, оne ahead оf the passenger cоmpartment and оne behind the engine, fоr a tоtal оf 13 cubic feet оf stоrage space. Chevrоlet says the Cоrvette can fit twо sets оf gоlf clubs in the rear cоmpartment when they are stacked оn tоp оf each оther.

Verdict

It has all the perfоrmance we were prоmised but it alsо has a presence and character that was unexpected but very welcоme. It’s nоt like the previоus Cоrvette, but it’s alsо nоt like any оther car yоu can buy tоday. It still cоsts muscle car mоney and gives yоu supercar perfоrmance. But nоw it just dоesn’t make yоu wоrk quite sо hard tо access it. And it’s all the better fоr that, whatever the diehards might say.

About Renewal Of ‘Virgin River’ For Season 3 Ahead of Season 2 On Netflix!

Virgin River, among the excellent feel-good dramas which have arrived on Netflix lately, is returning for season 3 before its scheduled season 2 summer 2020 release date on Netflix.

For those unaware, the series stars Colin Lawrence, Jenny Cooper, Alexandra Breckenridge, Tim Matheson, Benjamin Hollingsworth, and Grayson Maxwell Gurnsey. It is about a midwife who awakens after several events that are traumatic into northern California.

It is a small-town show that may normally be found on networks like Hallmark or ABC.

Season 2 has been expected to release over Netflix in the summertime but is not currently recorded for an August release meaning it’s likely it will not be available until September or October 2020 at the earliest.

We have discovered that season 3 of the Virgin River was given the green light and is expected to get underway with filming at a month.

It is not entirely rare for displays to be renewed ahead of a season. Orange Is the New Black was renewed for multiple seasons several years back along with The Umbrella Academy lately allegedly followed suit and in fact, Virgin River season 2 was renewed before season 1 even dropping on Netflix.

The series, as you may be aware, is filmed in Vancouver that’s currently set to reopen filming over the next few months (though that could change in a moment’s notice given the fluidity of the COVID situation).

Presently, based on Production Weekly, the series is set to start filming period 3 of the Virgin River from August 25th through December 11th.
