The Weeknd To Star In Hbo Series The Idol

The Weeknd will try his hand at acting with a drama series from Sam Levinson in development at HBO. The premium cabler is developing The Idol, which the “Blinding Lights” singer, otherwise known as Abel Tesfaye, would star in, co-write and executive produce. Euphoria creator Levinson co-created the series with Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, a former nightlife entrepreneur-turned-writer who is also The Weeknd’s producing partner.

The series follows a female pop singer who starts a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult. Joseph Epstein (Health and Wellness) will serve as showrunner and writer on the project. Levinson, Tesfaye, Fahim, Epstein, Ashley Levinson, Kevin Turen, Bron Studios’ Aaron L. Gilbert will exec produce. Mary Laws, who has written on Succession and Preacher, will write and co-exec produce. The Weeknd’s manager Wassim “SAL” Slaiby and creative director La Mar C. Taylor also will co-exec produce. Tesfaye is represented by Slaiby at Salxco, Christian Carino at CAA, and Kenny Meiselas at Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks. Levinson is represented by WME, Stuart Manashil and Sloss Law. Epstein is repped by WME and Ken Gross.

John Mcafee The Antivirus King Found Dead In Spanish Prison

The antivirus software entrepreneur John McAfee has been found dead in his cell in Spain, hours after the country’s highest court approved his extradition to the United States, where he was wanted on tax-related criminal charges that carry a prison sentence of up to 30 years. Catalan’s regional police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, confirmed a report in El País that McAfee, 75, had been found dead in the Brians 2 prison near Barcelona, late on Wednesday. In a statement, the Catalan justice department said that prison officers and medics had tried to save the life of a 75-year-old man but had been unsuccessful. After attempts to save him failed, he was pronounced dead. “Judicial staff have been dispatched to the prison and are investigating the causes of death,” the statement said, adding: “Everything points to death by suicide.” McAfee’s lawyer on Wednesday told the Reuters news agency that McAfee had apparently hanged himself in his prison cell.

McAfee, the creator of the McAfee virus software , was arrested last October at Barcelona’s international airport as he was about to board a flight to Istanbul. At that time, a judge ordered that McAfee should be held in jail while awaiting the outcome of a hearing on extradition. The arrest of the entrepreneur came a day after authorities had made public a US indictment stemming from his alleged tax offense. Tennessee prosecutors had charged McAfee with evading taxes after failing to report income made from promoting cryptocurrencies while he did consultancy work, as well as income from speaking engagements and selling the rights to his life story for a documentary. On Wednesday, Spain’s highest court had approved McAfee’s extradition to the United States, although the decision could be appealed and his final extradition would have had to be approved by the Spanish cabinet. “The court agrees to grant the extradition of John David McAfee as requested by the American judicial authorities for the crimes referred to in the tax offense indictments for years 2016 to 2018,” read the 16-page ruling. The ruling also made clear that the US charges referred to the three fiscal years from 2016 to 2018. In a hearing held via videolink earlier this month, McAfee had argued that the charges against him were politically motivated and said he would spend the rest of his life in prison if he was returned to the US.

Kawhi Leonard out for 2021 NBA Western Finals Against Suns

Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard will miss at least the first two games of the Western Conference Finals against the Phoenix Suns. Per Chris B. Haynes of Yahoo Sports, Leonard didn't travel with the team to Phoenix in order to continue rehabbing his injured knee. Leonard played the first four games of his team's Western Conference second-round playoff series against the Utah Jazz. He averaged 32.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in Games 3 and 4, which ended with Clipper wins to tie the series at two games apiece. However, the 29-year-old suffered a right knee sprain and was ruled out indefinitely on June 16, per Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

Charania later updated that report to clarify Leonard suffered an unspecified ACL injury. ESPN's Ramona Shelburne also provided updates on the same day, both on Twitter and during The Jump: Later that day, the Clippers upset the Utah Jazz 119-111 in Game 5 of their Western Conference second-round playoff series to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven matchup. After the game, L.A. head coach Ty Lue provided an update on Leonard: The Clippers managed to win their last two games against the Utah Jazz without Leonard. They erased a 25-point deficit in Game 6 to earn a 131-119 win, earning the franchise's first appearance in the Western Conference Finals. Leonard averaged 24.8 points on 51.2 percent shooting, 6.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game for the Clippers this season. The five-time All-Star, two-time NBA champion and five-time All-NBA player is in his 10th NBA campaign. Terance Mann, who scored 39 points in Game 6 against the Jazz, will likely start in Leonard's spot against the Suns. Los Angeles and Phoenix will play Game 1 at Talking Stick Resort Arena on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET.

New Gilas Pilipinas Defeat South Korea in 2021 Fiba Asia Cup

SJ BELANGEL hit the game-winning three at the buzzer as Gilas Pilipinas exorcised its demons by taking down Korea, 81-78, on Wednesday at the AUF Gym to formally book its spot in the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup. Belangel called bank on an off-balanced three-pointer over Lee Seoung-hyun from a Dwight Ramos inbound as Gilas completed a fightback from 17-points down and beat Korea in the same heartbreaking manner that this team beat the Philippines in the past. With the win, the Philippines remained unbeaten in Group A at 4-0 and secured of its seat in the continental showpiece in Indonesia this August. Belangel, who was just in grade school when Gilas last won over Korea in the 2013 Fiba Asia Championship semifinals, showed a lot of heart by starting in place of the injured Matt Nieto and ended up as the unlikely hero.

The Ateneo guard fired 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists to preserve the country's immaculate record against the mighty Koreans at home and ended a run of bitter losses to this same team in their last six duels. Dwight Ramos carried the torch for the Philippines with 16 points on 9-of-10 free throw shooting, to go with five rebounds and two steals in a game which saw a lot of heroes emerge from this young Gilas team. Carl Tamayo added 10 points and RJ Abarrientos got six. They played crucial roles in Gilas' fightback when the country overcome an early 33-16 deficit before holding steady in a nip-and-tuck battle in the second half. The victory, however, almost was stolen again as the Filipinos lost a 70-66 lead in the final 3:48 and allowed the Koreans to retake the lead, 75-70, after a Jeon Seong Hyeon three with 2:26 remaining. Gilas crawled their way back, with Ange Kouame's putback with 10.5 seconds giving them a 78-75 advantage. His bonus freebie, though, did not fall that led to Lee Hyun Jung draining the game-tying triple with 2.8 left.

But it only made the come-from-behind win sweeter for the Filipinos and coach Tab Baldwin with Belangel delivering the goods much to the delight of the Filipino fans watching online. Kouame chipped in 12 points and six rebounds in his first game as a naturalized player in a game that relegated the usual headliner Kai Sotto to a supporting role. The Filipino prodigy got 11 points and seven boards in his seniors' team debut. Gilas will enjoy the fruits of this triumph before going back on Friday against Indonesia. Ra Gun-A led the way for Korea with 24 points and 15 rebounds as the young Korean side suffered their first loss to drop to 2-1. Lee, the standout from Davidson College, nabbed 15 points on 3-of-9 clip from distance, while Jeon also had nine in the defeat. Korea shot itself on the foot as it only went 5-of-19 from threes in the second half, cooling off after its sizzling start.

It will look to rebound on Thursday against Indonesia (1-2).

The Scores:

PHILIPPINES 81 -- Ramos 16, Belangel 13, Kouame 12, Sotto 11, Tamayo 10, Abarrientos 6, Baltazar 6, Go 4, Nieto 3, Navarro 0, Tungcab 0.

KOREA 78 -- Ra 24, Lee HJ 15, Lee SH 9, Jeon 9, Kang 7, Moon 6, Yang 4, Kim 2, Lee DS 2, Byeon 0.

Quarters: 12-21, 36-44, 56-57, 81-78.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Doors Look Much Better On PS5

One of my only complaints about the original release of Final Fantasy VII Remake was the texture pop-in and weird, blurry texture of Cloud’s apartment door in the Sector 7 slums. I am pleased to report that these issues have been resolved in the PlayStation 5 version, though Cloud still refuses to close the damn door. How many minutes were wasted last year as Final Fantasy VII Remake players waited for the door texture of Cloud’s apartment to finally render?

The path to the run-down flophouse room was filled with blurry signs that only sharpened when we got close, so it made sense that maybe that same phenomenon was making the apartment door look like smeared shit. Alas, this was not the case. The textures were just somehow horrible, pulling us briefly out of our drunken Final Fantasy VII Remake stupor so we could stare in horror at ugly reality. What material was this? Why was the bottom half discolored? The answers to these questions eluded me, until now. The door is wooden with a protective metal guard bolted to the bottom, likely to protect it from the kicks of large, fashion-forward steel-toed boots. The outside of the newly-renovated/rendered door is even better. It’s got a trio of triangular metal hinges, that same kick guard, and even a blank name/number plate, in case proprietor Marle ever decides to hire an engraver. We can take from Cloud’s continued inability to close doors that the door texture is not a factor in his decision to leave them wide open. Maybe it’s just beyond his training. Or perhaps he’s simply accepted the fact that since the doors close automatically once nearly out of view, there’s just no point. Either way, rejoice Final Fantasy VII Remake fans. Our long door-based suffering has finally (mostly) come to an end.

Kingdom: Ashin Of The North Release Date

Mark your calendars! Kingdom: Ashin of the North was directed by Kim Seong-hun, who directed and oversaw the production of the first season of Kingdom. The screenplay was written by Kim Eun-hee who also wrote the script of the first two seasons. According to Kim Eun-hee, the special episode would be a relevant story for the upcoming seasons of Kingdom. “We cannot leave out the story of the resurrection plant. I decided to go with a special episode because I thought it would be more interesting,” she said in an interview. "If the first season served as the cornerstone of the show, Kingdom: Ashin of the North, will be a stepping stone for the third season of Kingdom." This special episode will be a treat as we wait for the next season of Kingdom.

We don't know about you, but when Netflix released the Korean thriller series Kingdom, our eyes did not leave the TV screen for days. The 2019 show explores the possibility of fighting zombies with mere tactics and fewer guns something that movie buffs have never seen before. The series was positively reviewed and well-loved for blending horror against a historical backdrop the reason for its producers to release a special episode titled Kingdom: Ashin of the North. This special episode reveals the origins of the resurrection plant that triggered the avalanche of tragic events that swept through Joseon and a woman abandoned by all Ashin. Netflix has just given Kingdom fans a glimpse of the upcoming episode in a tense teaser. The footage shows young Ashin holding a torch and entering an eerie cave in the dark. Inside, she discovers strange markings on a rock along with the mysterious resurrection plant. The accompanying copy reads, “to revive the dead, a price must be paid”. South Korean actress, Jun Ji-hyun will be making her highly-anticipated small-screen comeback as Asin, five years after her last drama, Legend of the Blue Sea. If you remember, Chang and Seo-bi find the resurrection plant near the Chinese border and was told that someone from China is selling it to the local villagers. The final shot of Kingdom season two was of Jun who viewers assume is spreading the virus on purpose. We can expect the special episode to be an expanded backstory of how it all began and explore Asin and the plant's origins.

Netflix’s Live-action Take On Cowboy Bebop Is Coming This Fall

Netflix has announced that the long-awaited live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop will premiere this fall. The science fiction, noir, and Western-infused bounty hunting series will also feature new music from the anime’s original composer, Yoko Kanno.

There was, unfortunately, no trailer alongside Netflix’s announcement, but it did reintroduce a few of the cast members, who already seem to be fitting into their roles quite well specifically John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, and Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine. Reports first surfaced that Netflix was producing a live-action adaptation of the iconic series in 2017 and were later confirmed in 2018. The full cast of actors playing the show’s bounty hunters was revealed in 2019, including Cho as the series lead. The show is set to receive a 10-episode season written by one of the screenwriters of Thor: Ragnarok Christopher Yost. We’ll have to wait a bit longer for a real look at the new Cowboy Bebop, but at least we can rest assured space bounty hunting antics will be kicking off later this year.

Riot Games Announces Valorant Mobile

VALORANT, Riot Games’ flagship first-person shooter, is officially coming to mobile. The announcement comes as the PC version celebrates its first anniversary boasting over 14 million active players each month. The move to mobile mirrors the company’s release of League of Legends: Wild Rift late last year.

Details about the upcoming release are few and far between. Beyond confirming the new title, the gaming company has yet to reveal the release date, but VALORANT Executive Producer Anna Donlon confirms that the mobile version will not be a spin-off or a different type of game and will not allow cross-play with the PC version. “To see our growing player community recognize and appreciate what we’re trying to do with VALORANT is beyond what we could’ve expected and we’re thrilled to soon offer the same competitive VALORANT experience to even more global players.” Riot has announced that VALORANT Mobile will be tapping into the global mobile audience as their first move in expanding the VALORANT franchise. While details of the expansion are all up for speculation, it is worth noting that the company’s other title, League of Legends, has expanded to multiple games, comics, and an upcoming animated series. To continue celebrating VALORANT’s successful first year, Riot has announced that players will be able to claim free in-game items throughout June to commemorate the milestone. Come celebrate VALORANT's One year with us. The VALORANT Anniversary event starts NOW! Click through for more details.

Hbo Max’s Cheaper $10 Ad-supported Plan Is Finally Here

HBO Max’s ad-supported streaming option has officially launched on the platform. The new tier will be priced at $10 per month, which shaves $5 off HBO Max’s regular cost of $15 per month. How exactly HBO Max planned to successfully introduce ads on its premium content has been a bit of a head-scratcher, as premium and ad-free content was sort of the entire point of HBO to begin with. But to hear the company justify it, ads on the platform’s content will be both “elegant” and “respectful” of the subject matter. “Advertising is a time-tested way to reduce the cost of great entertainment and reach a wider audience,” Andy Forssell, EVP and general manager at HBO Max, said in a statement. “We’ve worked hard to create an elegant, tasteful ad experience that is respectful of great storytelling for those users who choose it, and which we’re confident will deliver for our advertising partners as well.”

While significantly cheaper, users who subscribe to this budget tier will be missing out on some of HBO Max’s more premium features. The company introduced 4K streaming to its service last year with the premiere of Wonder Woman 1984, but video quality on the budget tier will be capped at 1080p much like Netflix does with its cheaper tiers. Additionally, titles will not be available for offline viewing on the more affordable plan, and users will lose the ability to access same-day movie premieres on the service. Subscribers will eventually be able to view these titles, just in the months after their theatrical release windows end. Everyone on the cheaper with-ads plan will have full access to the service’s originals, however. WarnerMedia said in a press release that ad time will be capped at a max of four minutes per hour. In addition, ads will not play on HBO originals — a smart move on WarnerMedia’s part if it hopes to maintain its relationships with high-profile talent and creators. The company said that as users continue using the service, “subscribers can expect to see greater personalization in the ads they do see with more innovation in formats to come.” The ad experience kicks off this month with more than 35 brands at launch. Given that its originals are sort of the entire point of subscribing to the service, and taking into account the fact that these titles will remain free of ads, it’ll be interesting to see how HBO Max’s subscriber numbers change in the months ahead. I, for one, am looking forward to cutting $5 per month off my subscriptions tab now that I know I’ll be able to stream Mare of Easttown in peace.
